May is here, and with it comes a new focus: building strength from within. This month is about shifting the attention away from the external and bringing it back to what’s holding us together inside—our core. Not just our abs, but the deep strength that supports our posture, steadies our breath, and helps us feel grounded in movement and in stillness.
When we think of core strength, it’s easy to picture planks and crunches. But there’s more to it. Core strength is also about stability, control, and the ability to move with ease. It’s about the smaller muscles that don’t always get noticed but make a big difference in how we move. Whether you’re holding a balance pose or flowing through a transition, your core is quietly doing a lot of the heavy lifting.
This month, we’re not just targeting the muscles—we’re exploring how core strength helps us show up more fully in our practice and in life. When we feel strong from within, we move with more confidence and ease. We stand taller, breathe deeper, and begin to trust our bodies in a new way.
That’s why May’s theme is paired with a 7-Day Core Challenge. Each video in the challenge is around 20 minutes, designed to be approachable yet effective. It’s not about pushing to the max or aiming for six-pack abs—it’s about building awareness and strength in a way that feels good and lasts beyond the mat. Whether you do all seven days or just dip in when it fits your schedule, you’ll notice the difference.
Throughout the month, the calendar brings you a daily practice designed to support this theme. Some days are about activation and power. Others are slower, inviting in control, breath, and release. The mix is intentional. Think flows that challenge your balance, poses that work deep into the stabilising muscles, and transitions that ask you to engage through the whole body.
There’s a bit of everything: standing strength work, seated core-focused breath and movement, dynamic flows that invite in repetition and coordination, and moments of rest to let the body soak it all in. This variety is part of the magic. Strength isn’t built only through effort—it’s also built through awareness and recovery.
You don’t need to be able to hold a long plank or balance in boat pose to benefit from this. Core work in yoga is more subtle than that. Sometimes it’s as simple as breathing into your lower belly or noticing the way your ribcage moves as you twist. Those moments of quiet strength are just as valuable as the ones that make you sweat.
You’ll also find some flows that sneak in core work in unexpected places. Side planks that strengthen the obliques while testing your balance. Chair pose repetitions that fire up the lower belly. Even transitions like moving from Downward Dog to Lunge become opportunities to connect with the core.
And let’s not forget the breath. When you engage the deep core—especially through the transverse abdominis—it works hand-in-hand with your diaphragm. That connection between breath and strength is something we come back to again and again this month.
The 7-Day Core Challenge is free and open to all. If you haven’t already signed up, here’s the link. Once you’re in, each day’s video will be ready and waiting for you. They’re short enough to squeeze into a busy day but powerful enough to leave you feeling accomplished. And they fit perfectly alongside the rest of the May calendar.
If you’re already a member, you’ll find the challenge videos gathered together for easy access. And the rest of the month’s classes are ready to take you deeper—whether you want to work on strength, mobility, or just feel more connected in your practice.
This theme also ties in with a wider idea: building resilience. Strength from within isn’t only about muscles—it’s about how we respond when things get hard. It’s about the little decisions we make to show up for ourselves, even when we don’t feel like it. That kind of strength builds over time, and yoga gives us a space to practice it.
Every time you hold a pose for one more breath, or return to your mat after a long day, you’re building that quiet, steady strength. It may not be flashy, but it stays with you. And over time, it changes how you move, how you breathe, and even how you carry yourself in the world.
So this month, take the time to explore what strength means to you. Maybe it’s showing up for a short practice when you’re low on energy. Maybe it’s holding a plank a little longer than you did last week. Or maybe it’s simply pausing to breathe and feel your feet on the ground.
It’s all part of the same process. Strength isn’t something we need to force—it’s already in us. Yoga just gives us the tools to uncover it.
Here’s to May, to core connection, and to discovering your strength from within. Let’s move together.
Ayse x
