September has always felt like a bit of a turning point. The air changes, the days get shorter, and there’s that quiet feeling of transition. It’s the season where you start thinking about routines again after the summer, and in many ways, it’s a perfect time to explore balance. That’s why our September theme is Balance in Motion.
Now, I know when we hear the word balance, most of us think of standing on one leg wobbling around in Tree Pose, hoping not to fall over. And yes, that’s part of it, but balance is so much more. It’s about how we move through life without tipping too far in one direction. It’s about steadiness, yes, but also about adjusting, shifting, and even allowing the wobble without giving up.
On the mat, balance challenges us in very physical ways. We strengthen our legs and core, we test our focus, we learn to breathe even when everything feels a little shaky. But what I love most about balance in yoga is that it’s never static. Even when you’re “holding” a pose, your body is making tiny adjustments all the time. You’re in motion, even in stillness. And that, to me, is a beautiful reminder that balance is not about being perfect, it’s about responding.
This month we’re exploring that idea in different layers. We’ll start with the classic standing balances, then add strength for stability, then arm balances and core work, and finally, a playful dive into inversions and transitions. It’s a journey from the ground up, and along the way we’ll wobble, fall, laugh, and try again.
Why Balance Matters Beyond the Mat
If yoga has taught me anything, it’s that the lessons we practise on the mat always spill over into everyday life. Balance is no exception. Think about how often you feel “off balance” in your week. Maybe your work takes over and you don’t feel like you have time for rest. Maybe you lean too much into doing for others and forget to care for yourself. Maybe you’re juggling so many things that you feel like you’re constantly about to topple.
When we practise balance in yoga, we’re really practising how to handle those moments. You stand in Warrior III wobbling like mad and instead of getting annoyed, you breathe, reset your gaze, and try again. Imagine bringing that same mindset into your day when things don’t go as planned. Suddenly balance is not about never falling, but about how you recover when you do.
And of course, there’s the other side. Sometimes balance means recognising when to stop. When to say no. When to let yourself rest. Our September calendar reflects this too. For every strong, fiery balance practice, you’ll also find softer flows and restorative sessions, because finding balance is not just about effort, it’s also about ease.
What to Expect This Month
Here’s how the Balance in Motion calendar flows:
-
Week 1, Standing Balance Basics: We’ll play with Tree, Warrior III, Half Moon, Dancer, and other standing balances. Expect to wobble, laugh, and discover just how strong your legs really are.
-
Week 2, Stability with Strength: This week is all about grounding and control. Think Eagle Pose, Figure Four, and transitions that require focus. The kind of practice where you feel your legs the next day, in a good way.
-
Week 3, Core and Arm Balances: Time to bring in Crow, Flying Pigeon, Side Crow, and even Eight Angle. Don’t worry if you’ve never tried an arm balance. We’ll build strength and prep, and you can take it at your own pace.
-
Week 4, Inversions and Play: Here’s where things get fun. We’ll prep for handstands, headstands, and forearm stands, always with plenty of options to stay at a level that feels good. Think playful, not pressured.
Along the way we have a few brand new recordings to guide you:
-
From Earth to Tiptoes
-
Grace in Motion
-
Core to Crow
-
Handstand Playtime
-
Strong Roots, Light Steps
These will be sprinkled into the calendar to give you fresh ways to explore balance with me.
A Little Honesty About Balance
Let me share a little secret. I still wobble in Warrior III. Some days I fall out of Crow after two seconds. Balance is not something you “achieve” and then you’re done. It’s a constant practice, a conversation between your body, your breath, and your mind.
The gift of balance is not the perfect pose, but the patience you build by coming back to it again and again. It’s the laugh you let out when you fall. It’s the reminder that you don’t have to be steady all the time to keep moving forward.
And honestly, that’s why I love dedicating a whole month to it. Balance is one of those things that benefits from repetition. The more you practise, the more you notice the little shifts. Maybe today you can stay one breath longer in Warrior III, maybe you catch yourself before toppling in Half Moon, maybe you just learn to smile when you wobble.
Balance in Everyday Life
I think about balance a lot off the mat too. Some days I’m full of energy, running through my to-do list, and others I just want to curl up and rest. Balance is knowing that both are okay. It’s allowing yourself to push and then giving yourself permission to pause.
Yoga can be that gentle reminder to check in. If you’ve been going full speed, maybe the balanced choice is to slow down with a restorative flow. If you’ve been sitting all day, maybe the balanced choice is to move and sweat a little. It doesn’t have to be dramatic. Balance lives in small, everyday decisions.
This month I invite you to notice where balance feels easy in your life and where it feels tricky. Is there something you’re doing too much of? Something you’re avoiding? Could you bring a little more steadiness into your day, not by being perfect, but by adjusting and trying again?
Your Invitation
So here we are, a new month and a new theme. Balance in Motion is not about nailing the “hard” poses, it’s about learning how to stay steady in the wobble, both in yoga and in life. It’s about laughing when you fall, trying again, and realising that balance is never still, it’s always alive.
