There’s something about August. Maybe it’s the long days or the pull to slow down before routine returns. It often feels like a pause. A time to take stock, check in and make a shift. Not necessarily a big one. Just enough to feel lighter.

This month we’re focusing on the upper body. It’s the part of us that quietly carries more than we realise. And not just physically. Think about how your shoulders lift when you’re tense. How your jaw tightens. How your chest closes off when things feel heavy.

All of that builds up. Holding, gripping, bracing. It becomes the default.

Movement can remind us there’s another way.

The upper body includes the shoulders, chest, upper back, arms and neck. It’s often the first place we feel tension. It’s where we brace when things get overwhelming. And it’s where habits of sitting for long hours, carrying bags, picking up children or even scrolling on a phone start to settle in.

We round forward. We stop breathing fully. We feel stiff. And eventually that stiffness spreads. Into the lower back, the hips, the breath, the mind.

We don’t always notice it because it’s so common.

That’s why this month is about letting some of that go.

Just enough to create space. A sense of ease. A feeling of movement that’s not about pushing but about noticing what can soften.

When the upper body moves well, everything else shifts. Breath deepens. Posture lifts. Core strength becomes more accessible. Even your legs feel lighter when your chest and shoulders are not overworking.

This isn’t about flexibility. It’s not about perfect form. It’s about unravelling what’s stuck and remembering that it’s possible to move in a way that feels better. More open. More easeful.

Some days that might mean flowing through poses that strengthen your shoulders and arms. Other days it might be a few quiet minutes lying on your back with your arms open and your breath soft.

When you carry less, movement becomes more natural. When you let go of what’s not helping, you move with more freedom.

The upper body plays a bigger role in yoga than most people think. In downward dog or plank, you rely on arm and shoulder strength. In seated twists or backbends, your spine and chest need space. Even in quiet postures, your breath moves through your ribs and upper back. When these areas are tight or tired, movement feels harder. But when they’re strong and mobile, everything else becomes smoother.

This month’s calendar is built to help you explore all of that. There’s a mix of strong and soft, short and long, still and flowing. Each class supports your upper body in a different way. You’ll move through sequences that build strength in the arms and shoulders, stretch through the chest and upper back, and release tension from the neck and jaw. You’ll also find slower sessions to reset your posture and restore calm.

You don’t need to do every class. The calendar is there as a guide, not a rule. Take what you need. Skip what you don’t. Let it support you in finding consistency without pressure.

One of the most common reasons people avoid upper body work is because they feel they’re not strong enough. But strength doesn’t come from pushing hard once in a while. It builds quietly through repetition and awareness. And in yoga, strength is never separate from softness.

You’ll find lots of options in the classes this month. Knees down. Slower transitions. Rest when needed. It’s not about proving anything. Just noticing what’s possible when you return again and again.

You might start to feel lighter. Not because the poses changed. But because you did.

When your shoulders release, your breath deepens. When your chest opens, you feel more present. When your back supports you, you carry yourself differently.

Even the smallest shifts matter. Feeling taller. Feeling less tension. Sleeping better. Moving more freely. Breathing more fully. Noticing more often.

None of it happens all at once. But over a few weeks, with gentle consistency, it starts to take hold. That’s the power of regular practice. Not in how hard you go, but in how often you come back.

If things have felt heavy lately or you haven’t moved much in a while, this is a good place to start again. There’s no need to catch up or do anything fancy. Just move a little more. Carry a little less. Let the rest happen on its own.

We’re not aiming for perfect posture or big breakthroughs. We’re just making space. For breath. For strength. For release. For ease.
