Have you ever noticed how easy it is to think that yoga has to happen in a certain way?
An hour on the mat. A quiet room. Plenty of energy. No distractions.
Then life happens. Summer holidays, family visits, days out, late evenings, warmer weather, or simply feeling like your routine has disappeared. Before you know it, a week or two has passed without practising and you start wondering if you’ve “fallen off track”.
I think we’ve all been there.
That’s why our theme for August is Gentle Rhythm.
After July’s Light & Mobile theme, where we focused on enjoying movement and letting the body feel free, August is about something even simpler. It’s about finding a rhythm that works for you, whatever your month looks like.
Not a perfect rhythm. Finding your rhythm.
One of the things I’ve learnt over the years is that consistency doesn’t always look the way we imagine it will. It isn’t practising every single day without fail. It isn’t ticking every box on a calendar. It isn’t squeezing in a long class when you’re already exhausted.
Sometimes consistency is choosing a 20-minute class because that’s all you have time for. Sometimes it’s spending ten minutes stretching before bed. Sometimes it’s rolling out your mat when you almost talked yourself out of it.
Those small moments count far more than we often give them credit for.
I think we can be quite hard on ourselves. If we miss a few practices, it’s easy to feel like we’ve failed or that we need to start again from the beginning. But your body doesn’t think like that. Every practice you’ve ever done is still there. Your body remembers movement. It remembers your breath. It remembers how good it feels to slow down. You don’t lose everything because you took a holiday or had a busy couple of weeks.
You simply come back. And coming back is always enough. That’s something I hope this month’s calendar encourages.
Rather than feeling like a challenge to complete, I’d love you to see it as a gentle guide. Some weeks you might follow it every day. Other weeks you might only manage one or two sessions. Both are absolutely fine.
The calendar is there to support you, not to judge you. Throughout August we’ll continue moving through a mixture of Vinyasa flows, mobility sessions, stretching, strengthening and restorative practices. Some days will help you build a little heat, while others will simply help you unwind after a busy day.
I often remind my students that yoga isn’t about doing the hardest class every time you step on your mat. It’s about choosing the practice your body needs today. It often benefits most from regular, enjoyable movement that you can return to again and again.
Think about walking. You wouldn’t expect one very long walk every month to feel better than a few shorter walks each week. Yoga is much the same. A little movement done regularly can make such a difference.
You might notice you feel less stiff when you wake up. Your shoulders feel more relaxed after sitting at a desk. Your hips don’t complain quite as much. You breathe a little more deeply. You sleep a little better. These are the changes that quietly appear over time. They’re easy to overlook because they happen gradually, but they’re often the changes that make the biggest difference to everyday life.
I also think August gives us permission to let go of expectations. Perhaps you’re travelling. Perhaps the children are home from school. Perhaps work is quieter, or maybe it’s busier than ever. Whatever your month looks like, your yoga practice doesn’t have to compete with it. It can fit around it. One practice in the garden. Another in a hotel room. A gentle stretch before breakfast. Twenty minutes before everyone else wakes up. A restorative session before bed. Your practice doesn’t stop being valuable because it looks different. In fact, learning to adapt your practice is one of the most useful skills you can develop. Life is always changing. Yoga can change with us. I think that’s one of the reasons people manage to keep practising for years. They stop expecting every practice to feel the same.
This month I’d encourage you to let go of the idea that every practice needs to be your “best”. There is no award for the longest class. No prize for never missing a day. Just the quiet satisfaction of showing up when you can.
If that means practising once this week, wonderful. If it’s three times, brilliant. If you follow every day of the calendar, that’s lovely too.
It’s all yoga.
One thing I hope you’ll notice by the end of August is that movement starts to feel like part of your day rather than another task on your to-do list. That’s when it becomes easier to stay consistent.
As we move towards September, that gentle rhythm will give you a wonderful foundation to build on. Instead of feeling like you’re starting again after the summer, you’ll already have a practice that’s quietly ticking along.
So this month, be kind to yourself. Move when you can. Choose the class that feels right for today.
And remember that every practice, no matter how long or short, is a step towards feeling better.
